Our core business is mining coal and generation of electricity. Our sustainability challenge is to balance the demand from the community and industry for an affordable and reliable electricity supply with the impact of the production of this electricity on the environment and the community where we operate.
Understanding the interaction between our operations and the natural environment, society, the economy and our stakeholders allows us to develop processes and initiatives to mitigate our impacts and enhance our positive contributions. A critical part of defining our material sustainability-related issues has been to understand the areas that matter most to our stakeholders.
Natural Environment:
We are committed to having in place a robust approach to environmental stewardship that is focused on responsible management of natural resources, protecting local biodiversity, increasing energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and contributing towards a more circular economy by minimising waste.
Social:
We recognise the high cultural value that Lake Macquarie and its associated watercourses hold and manage our operations to protect these natural and cultural values. We are committed to fostering positive relationships with our neighbouring communities through active engagement and ongoing support for activities that promote local prosperity and growth.
Economy:
We play a significant role in the NSW economy by generating over 6 TWh of electricity annually, supporting over 500 full-time employees, and making substantial investments in goods, services, and taxes.
Stakeholders:
We engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, local communities, suppliers, and government agencies. We prioritise a safe and inclusive workplace and have established various engagement forums to connect with the local community.
Our ongoing value position during Australia’s energy transformation is to meet the market demands for reliable and affordable electricity while minimising the environmental impacts of our operations. In this role we continue to deliver a consequential contribution to local and state economies.
