Vales Point Battery Energy Storage System

Project

Delta in partnership with Samsung Construction & Trading (Samsung) is exploring a large-scale battery energy storage system at the Vales Point Power Station site which could strengthen NSW’s electricity supply reliability and support the renewable energy transition.

Have your say - Concept design and EIS investigations

We are inviting community and stakeholder feedback on the Vales Point BESS concept design and key matters being investigated in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Your feedback will help shape the proposal. Complete the online survey, visit a community information display or email us at ValesPointBESS@deltapae.com.au.
Feedback is invited until 5pm Sunday 7 December 2025.

Project overview

The proposed project involves the construction, operation, maintenance and eventual decommissioning or re-powering of a 400-megawatt (MW) / 800-megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system, supported by ancillary infrastructure.

Once complete, the BESS will provide essential energy storage capacity to power around 250,000 homes for two hours (based on average household load of 1.6kWh), helping to keep NSW’s electricity network stable and reliable as more renewable energy, including solar and wind, is added to the network.

The project will also create local employment and procurement opportunities, providing a boost to the Central Coast and Hunter economies.

We are developing the project in partnership with global technology company Samsung. Samsung is undertaking the development of renewable energy and battery projects to provide alternative, sustainable energy sources for communities across Australia.

Location

The project is proposed to be located at Vales Point Power Station in the footprint of the former A Station, which is cleared land previously used for electricity generation and adjacent to existing Transgrid transmission infrastructure. View the Proposed Site Map.

Located in the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone, the Vales Point site has a long history of energy generation and is uniquely positioned to play a significant role in NSW energy’s transition, beyond the operation of its current coal-fired units. Its existing infrastructure, skilled workforce and proximity to Sydney and Newcastle makes the site well-suited to accommodating energy storage projects and supporting NSW's transition from coal to renewable energy.

Key benefits

Large-scale battery energy storage systems:

  • Energy security

Enhance energy security by responding quickly to network fluctuations, reducing blackout risks.
  • Renewables integration

Support renewables integration and provide network stability by storing excess electricity from the grid during periods of over-supply and providing additional energy when needed.
  • Regional economies

Benefit local and regional economies through creating construction jobs and operating and maintenance roles, as well as opportunities for local suppliers.

Project status

A concept design has been prepared and work is underway to prepare a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which involves a range of technical and environmental investigations. As part of this process, we're engaging with local residents, businesses and stakeholders to gather feedback to shape the proposal.

Community engagement

We are continuing to engage with the community and stakeholders as planning for the project progresses through a range of in-person and online activities.

Have Your Say – Concept design and EIS investigations

We're inviting the community and stakeholders to provide feedback on the concept design and key matters being investigated as part of the EIS.

View the concept design and learn more about key aspects of the project's delivery and operations in the November 2025 Community Update and series of Fact Sheets in the Project Documents below.

Share your thoughts by completing the online survey here. Or email your questions or feedback to ValesPointBESS@deltapae.com.au.

Feedback is invited by 5pm Sunday 7 December 2025.

Next steps

Community and stakeholder feedback received will be considered to finalise the proposal and EIS.

The State Significant Development (SSD) application, including supporting EIS, is expected to be completed and lodged in early 2026 for assessment by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. The EIS will be placed on public exhibition, providing another opportunity for the community to provide feedback. A final decision to proceed is expected to be made by Delta and Samsung in mid 2026, following completion of the EIS. Construction is subject to the final decision and environmental planning approval. View the Project Timeline.
