Sustainability

We are committed to planning for the future and reducing our environmental and community impact.

Our core business is mining coal and generation of electricity. Our sustainability challenge is to balance the demand from the community and industry for an affordable and reliable electricity supply with the impact of the production of this electricity on the environment and the community where we operate.

Understanding the interaction between our operations and the natural environment, society, the economy and our stakeholders allows us to develop processes and initiatives to mitigate our impacts and enhance our positive contributions. A critical part of defining our material sustainability-related issues has been to understand the areas that matter most to our stakeholders.

Natural Environment:

We are committed to having in place a robust approach to environmental stewardship that is focused on responsible management of natural resources, protecting local biodiversity, increasing energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and contributing towards a more circular economy by minimising waste.

Social:

We recognise the high cultural value that Lake Macquarie and its associated watercourses hold and manage our operations to protect these natural and cultural values. We are committed to fostering positive relationships with our neighbouring communities through active engagement and ongoing support for activities that promote local prosperity and growth.

Economy:

We play a significant role in the NSW economy by generating over 6 TWh of electricity annually, supporting over 500 full-time employees, and making substantial investments in goods, services, and taxes.

Stakeholders:

We engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, local communities, suppliers, and government agencies. We prioritise a safe and inclusive workplace and have established various engagement forums to connect with the local community.

Our ongoing value position during Australia’s energy transformation is to meet the market demands for reliable and affordable electricity while minimising the environmental impacts of our operations. In this role we continue to deliver a consequential contribution to local and state economies.

Our sustainability projects

Vales Point solar

The Vales Point Solar Project (SSD8533 Vales Point Solar Farm | Planning Portal - Department of Planning and Environment) was approved in October 2018 for up to 55MW solar to be located on the rehabilitated areas of the Vales Point ash dam. A final investment decision to proceed with the project is on hold pending the impact and roll-out of the NSW Renewable Energy Zones and Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.

Vales Point Battery Energy Storage System

Delta, in partnership with Samsung C&T, is exploring the development of a large-scale battery energy storage system at the Vales Point Power Station site. The proposed project, once complete, will provide essential energy storage capacity to help keep NSW’s electricity grid stable and reliable as more renewable energy, including solar and wind, is added to the grid. Biomass co-firing

We are reducing greenhouse emissions at Vales Point by up to 20,000 tonnes each year by co-firing quantities of renewable biomass fuels with coal. Currently, the biomass fuel includes sawmill residues, a by-product of forestry operations, and construction and demolition waste such as timber pallets.

Seagrass meadows restoration

We are working with University of NSW, Bahtabah Local Aboriginal Land Council, Gamay Rangers and Port Authority NSW on a research project focus on the restoration and preservation of seagrass meadows in NSW. Learn more.

Ash recycling

Coal Combustion Products (CCP) such as ash, a by-product of our operations, presents a valuable opportunity for reuse in cement and concrete products. Utilising waste ash in these products reduces the demand for virgin natural resources, lowers the embodied carbon in construction projects and aligns with corporate, state and federal circular economy and sustainability targets.
