Vales Point Battery Energy Storage System moves forward, another step closer to delivering regional benefits and future energy security.
The Vales Point Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has reached a major milestone, receiving its Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) from the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. Work will now start on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), bringing the project closer to delivering reliable energy for NSW communities and economic benefits for the Central Coast and Hunter.
Delta, in partnership with global energy solutions leader Samsung C&T, is developing the Vales Point BESS, which will provide up to 400-megawatt (MW) / 800-megawatt hour (MWh) energy storage capacity. By storing excess energy and releasing it to the grid during periods of peak demand, the BESS will help keep NSW’s electricity network stable and reliable as more renewables enter the grid.
“Receiving the SEARs is a major step forward for the Vales Point BESS,” said Delta’s Chief Executive Richard Wrightson.
“This project will help keep the lights on across NSW while creating jobs and economic opportunities for local businesses and the community.
“We’re proud to be working with Samsung to deliver a project that benefits the energy system, local community and wider Central Coast and Hunter regions.”
The SEARs, which outline the environmental and planning requirements for the project, are available to view on the NSW Major Projects Planning Portal.
The Vales Point BESS will operate 24/7, storing energy when supply exceeds demand and supplying it when the electricity grid needs it most. The project’s construction and operation will create employment and procurement opportunities, providing a boost to local economies across the Central Coast and Hunter regions.
Early engagement with the community has highlighted strong interest in the project’s potential to enhance energy reliability and support regional economic development.
With the SEARs now in place, Delta and Samsung will carry out detailed technical and environmental studies to prepare the EIS and State Significant Development Application (SSDA).
There will be more opportunities for the community and stakeholders to provide feedback later this year as these investigations progress.
