Vales Point ash dam

We're committed to safe and compliant management of our ash dams.

We operate and manage two ash dams at Vales Point Power Station – Vales Point Ash Dam No. 2 and Mannering Creek Ash Dam. The ash dams are operated in accordance with strict safety and environmental regulatory conditions, supported by comprehensive management, monitoring, and reporting programs.

Under NSW dam safety legislation, we undertake a range of review and reporting activities, including:

  • Annual Dams Safety Standards Report.
  • Annual review of Dam Safety Management Systems.
  • Emergency Plans, Operations and Maintenance Plans, and Risk Reports are reviewed every five years.
  • Consequence Category Assessments and Safety Reviews are undertaken every 15 years.

Annual Dams Safety Standards Reporting

The Annual Dams Safety Standards Report includes information about the dam’s consequence category, safety management system, and other safety management requirements. Reports are lodged with Dams Safety NSW in March each year, covering the period 1 January to 31 December in the previous calendar year.

Updated consequence categories are reported in 2025, following the 15-year Consequence Category Assessments competed in 2025, which adopted a new assessment framework as legislated in 2022.

Under this framework, Vales Point Ash Dam No. 2 is categorised as Low, and Mannering Creek Ash Dam is categorised as High B. The updated classifications reflect changes in the assessment methodology and do not indicate any change to the dams’ condition or structural integrity.  Both ash dams continue to operate safely in accordance with regulatory requirements.

The most recent five-yearly Operations and Maintenance Audit for Mannering Creek Ash Dam was completed in January 2026. Dams Safety NSW identified no non-conformances and confirmed the dam is being operated and maintained effectively in accordance with all requirements.

We are committed to the ongoing safe and compliant management of the Vales Point ash dams and to meeting all regulatory safety and environmental requirements.
