Development application commences for Vales Point Battery Energy Storage System

News

The development application process for the Vales Point Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is officially underway, marking a significant milestone for the project.

Delta, together with project partner Samsung C&T, has lodged a request for Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) with NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. This initiates the formal planning process, with the SEARs to set out the matters to be addressed in the project’s environmental impact statement.

The SEARs request and project scoping report are available to view on the NSW Major Projects Planning Portal.

About the project
The Vales Point BESS will provide up to 400-megawatt (MW) / 800-megawatt hour (MWh) renewable energy storage capacity. Connecting directly to the network, the system will operate 24/7 to store renewable energy and release it to the grid during periods of peak demand.

The project will involve the construction, operation, maintenance and eventual decommissioning or re-powering of a BESS and ancillary infrastructure at Vales Point Power Station.

Once operational, the Vales Point BESS will play a critical role in improving energy security and supporting NSW’s transition to renewable energy, while also creating local employment and procurement opportunities.

Community input so far
Early engagement with the community and key stakeholders helped inform the scoping report and provided valuable insights into local priorities and expectations.

Feedback has been largely positive, with strong support for the project’s potential to:

  • strengthen local energy security
  • contribute to the renewable energy transition
  • generate employment and business opportunities in the region.

Important concerns have also been raised about battery safety, including risks of fire and associated water runoff, as well as potential traffic impacts during construction. These issues will be investigated and addressed through the planning and assessment process.

Next steps
There will be more opportunities for the community and stakeholders to provide input later this year as the project’s planning and environmental assessments progress.
