Delta Excellence Scholarship 2026 Applications Open

News

Applications are now open for the 2026 Delta Power & Energy Excellence Scholarship at the University of Newcastle. With $15,000 on offer, the scholarship provides financial support and practical work experience for undergraduate engineering students eager to build a career in Australia’s energy sector. For more information and to apply, visit University of Newcastle – Delta Power & Energy Excellence Scholarship.

Delta has offered scholarships at the University of Newcastle since 2007, as part of our long-standing commitment to supporting the next generation of engineers and energy professionals across the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

The scholarship helps ease financial pressure for students to focus on their studies while gaining valuable industry experience at Vales Point Power Station – ensuring graduates are well-equipped to step into meaningful careers.

“Delta is proud to invest in skills, knowledge and emerging talent that will help shape the future of energy and engineering,” said Steve Gurney, Delta’s Company Secretary.

“Our partnership with the University of Newcastle plays a key role in strengthening industry connections and opening pathways for future talent and leaders.”

As the energy sector undergoes rapid transformation, Delta remains focused on fostering excellence, innovation and strong community connections. By backing students today, we’re helping build a strong talent pipeline for the energy transition and beyond.

Meet 2025 Scholarship Recipient: Chloe Collins
We spoke with Chloe Collins, Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours) student and Central Coast local, about her studies and advice for students considering a career in STEM.

What inspired you to study chemical engineering, and what drew you to a career in STEM?
I’ve always really enjoyed science and maths, and I liked the idea of putting things together and seeing how they work. Back in high school, someone suggested engineering as a way to combine those interests. So, I thought, why not? There wasn’t one defining moment, but I’ve been figuring it out along the way and enjoying the process.

What have you enjoyed most about your studies so far?
It’s been great seeing how the maths and science we learn apply to real-life situations. One of the highlights was an early course in particle engineering. The lecturer used baking as a way to explain how materials interact, and it completely changed the way I think about things. It made it all click.

Are there particular areas of chemical engineering that you're passionate about or hope to work in after graduation?
I'm really interested in how renewable energy and technology are developing, and how we can integrate them into existing systems. There's so much innovation happening in that space. That said, I’m keeping an open mind. I’m in the foundation stage of my learning, so I’m excited to see what areas grab me as I go.

How has the Delta scholarship made a difference in your studies or career goals?
It’s definitely taken a lot of pressure off. Especially with commuting from the Central Coast to Newcastle. That trip takes up almost a whole day, so not having to work as much on top of study has given me more time to focus on Uni, which I really appreciate.

Have you got any advice for anyone who is thinking about studying chemical engineering?
If you have a passion for science and engineering but it seems really intimidating, just take it one step at a time. Focus on learning the fundamentals, and then each new concept will build upon what you already know. Enjoy the process of learning and figuring things out.
